5.Warmia & Mazury - the land of the thousand lakes (code 105) Geographically and historically speaking, these are two separate areas (Warmia and Mazury) that used to hold more differences than similarities centuries ago. Nowadays the name still reflects those past separations, but the region is generally referred to as one entity for its landscape features. The area occupies the north-east of Poland and is literally all covered with the great primeval forests and lakes - hence the commonly used phrase - "the land of the thousand lakes". The region has plenty of little charming towns whose origins go back as far as the medieval ages: Olsztyn, Lidzbark Warminski or Frombork, just to name a few. The latter is one of the Copernicus towns (together with Olsztyn and Torun). The great astronomer lived in Frombork for 30 years and is burried in its 13th century cathedral, which now seats the Copernicus Museum with a Foucault's Pendulum. If you are into history, it is also a must to visit Malbork with the largest medieval castle that was erected by the Teutonic Knights (it now belongs to the UNESCO Worlwide Heritage list). The keep was never conquered through a siege or a straightforward attack and it only went under the Polish rule when the Master of the Teutonic Order paid tribute to one of the Polish kings. The region is also Poland's most favourite holiday destination as it offers infinite hiking, cycling or canoeing opportunities. So get down to exploring the lakes, the rivers and the canals. The town of Ostroda is then an ideal starting point, being a spot where 3 different canals are joined, offering a complex waterways system. The longest of the canals is the Ostroda-Elblag canal. The canal will take you to Elblag in the north of Poland, but if you feel like going on for a bit longer, the water route will stop short of the Baltic seashore. And if paddling is not your sport, a trip along the canal or around one of the lakes on a small cruising ship (operating May - September) is also an excellent idea for a one-day outing. Whatever you feel like doing, the region where the remains of the gothic past are set in the wilderness and purity of nature will not leave you bored.
